Luna's was created because of the owners' passion for butterflies, moths, caterpillars, and native plants.
Are there live butterflies and moths year round?
Unfortunately no. We raise Kentucky native species only. So we abide by when our moths and butterflies migrate and hibernate. This typically means that we will have live species mid-April to mid-September depending on Mother Nature and the cycles of mating. We will try to keep everyone updated on social media what is emerging.
What types of moths do you have?
We raise Luna, Cecropia, Imperial, IO, Polyphemus, & Regal Moths
Will these moths eat my wool?
Nope! These are all species of giant silk moth in the family Saturniidae. Surprisingly they don't have mouthparts. As a result, these guys and gals don't eat anything in the moth stage and only live for about 7 to 10 days. Their job is to mate with a partner to make eggs that turn into awesome caterpillars. As caterpillars they feed on the leaves of various trees, depending on the species.
What type of butterflies do you have?
We raise Painted Ladies, Monarchs, Giant Swallowtails, Tiger Swallowtails, Zebra Swallowtails , Spicebush Swallowtails, and Black Swallowtail butterflies. Not all butterflies are present at any one time. It varies depending on their life cycle and the season. If a given butterfly is not present then there is a good chance that we will have the caterpillars present for that species.
